Southways

Major Refurbishment and Extension

Private

Quick Summary

‘Southways’ is located in a rural location within the Green Belt in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The brief required the complete refurbishment and major extension of a Queen Anne style house to create a modern family home.

The house had previously been divided into two properties. This situation was exploited and the refurbishment was carried out in two discrete phases, enabling the clients to remain in occupation throughout the project.

The works involved the total renovation of the interior of the property to a high standard.  Alterations to the existing house included complete replacement of all existing joinery.  New dormer windows were constructed to make the existing roof space into habitable accommodation.  Numerous structural alterations were undertaken to increase room sizes within the property.  A new entrance lobby and porch were constructed as a focal point at the front of the house.

During the first phase of the project the property was extended to include a new garage block with ancillary accommodation over. Included within this phase were a ground floor gym, a utility room/link into the existing house and a new feature staircase leading to a new basement.

The basement extension was cut into sloping side of the chalk hillside.  It was finished with a grass roof to reduce its visual impact when viewed from across the valley.  The new basement includes an 18m swimming pool, a steam room and ancillary accommodation. The pool opens onto a south facing timber deck providing glimpses of the valley beyond.

In addition to the building works, the grounds and gardens have been substantially landscaped, including new seating and planted areas and a re-modelled entrance drive.
